The Red Devils started their new season in a confident fashion with a 3-0 win over Newcastle United. United looked set for a second successive victory after taking an early lead against Fulham through Paul Scholes and though Simon Davies managed to equalize for the Cottagers, Brede Hangeland’s own goal looked to have won the game for United only for the Norwegian defender to make amends by grabbing the equalizer in the final minute of the game.
Ferguson was furious with his side’s wastefulness in the game and also saw them fail to convert from the penalty spot which would have put the result beyond doubt. The result sees United slip up early in the race for the title with Chelsea securing comfortable victories in their opening two games and looking unstoppable after banging in 12 goals.
However Ferguson will be optimistic that his side will return back to winning ways against a West Ham side that has struggled in their opening two games. The Hammers go into the match on the back of two successive defeats that has seen them drop down into the relegation zone early in the season.
With his side expected to lose their next two games against United and Chelsea, manager Avram Grant will be aware that he has lost a good chance to get his side off to a good start in the new campaign.
