Everton will be looking to get back to winning ways in the Premier League when they face Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon. David Moyes needs to arrest his side's wretched form that has saw them slump to 16th in the Premier League table.
They look a mere shadow of last season's team that qualified for the Europa League last season as their squad continues to be blighted by injury. Another defeat last weekend, against fierce city rivals Liverpool, has only increased the pressure on their Scottish manager and their recent run is beginning to look abysmal.
However, confidence will have been boosted by the narrow 1-0 win over AEK Athens on Wednesday night which booked their place in the last 32 of the Europa League. The likes of Mikel Arteta, Phil Jagielka, Victor Anichebe, James Vaughan and Phil Neville were all missing through injury but the Toffees rose to the occasion and won in horrendous conditions via an early Diniyar Bilyaletdinov goal.
The result came at a cost as defenders Dan Gosling and Sylvain Distin (both hamstring) plus Brazilian striker Jo (knee) all failed to complete the game and are rated doubtful for the weekend alongside Joseph Yobo (hamstring) and Leon Osman (foot). Harry Redknapp's Spurs are currently sitting in third position in the league table but, after being beaten 2-0 by Manchester United in the Carling Cup quarter-finals in midweek, they will be looking for a more positive performance this time out.
With Jermain Defoe, Robbie Keane, Peter Crouch and Roman Pavlyuchenko at the shrewd manager's disposal, they have an embarrassment of riches to choose from. Defoe, after his heroics on November 22 when he scored five against Wigan Athletic in a 9-1 rout, will be wanting to add to his 11 goals in 12 league appearances as he looks to further impress England coach Fabio Capello ahead of next summer's World Cup finals in South Africa.
Spurs will be without defensive duo Jonathan Woodgate (groin) and Ledley King (hamstring). Sebastien Bassong and Michael Dawson could be the central defensive partnership for their trip north. Goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini, who was involved in a serious motorcycle injury last month, is not expected to return before the end of the season and broken leg victim Luka Modric continues his steady recovery.
